The plain rule first

S. C. Machamer, P.E. holds individual Professional Engineer (Electrical) licensure in Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, Maryland, and Washington; sealed engineering is not offered outside them. That is a hard licensure line — and a firm that treats it casually should worry you.

What working together still looks like

  • Teaming with your local engineer. An engineer licensed in your state serves as the engineer of record. We provide studies, analysis, and design support under that engineer's direction — and the sealing engineer reviews and seals the work as their own, which is exactly how responsible charge is supposed to function.
  • Scoping before you hire locally. An unofficial planning outline — scope, budget range, schedule — is not sealed engineering, and it can make you a far better-informed buyer before you engage a local firm.
  • Mexico. Projects in Mexico are delivered in collaboration with a local partner authorized to practice under Mexican law. S. C. Machamer, P.E. holds individual US licensure only and no Mexican credentials — our Spanish-language pages say the same thing.

Could you get licensed in my state?

Sometimes, for the right project — additional licensure is a deliberate step, not a promise. Raise it early in the conversation and you will get a straight answer about whether it is realistic for your timeline.

This page is educational. It is not engineering advice for your installation, and it is not legal advice — practice acts and code requirements change, and the authority having jurisdiction decides how they apply to a specific project.
